Grande Prairie looking to establish geothermal energy plant to create power

The County of Grande Prairie in Alberta is looking to build a geothermal plant in the district to create power generation. The county’s director of planning and development services says geothermal energy provides heat in a “green” manner.

The pilot project is seen as a way to create a utility in the county that will be both economically beneficial and benefit diversification. Other potential opportunities include district heating, agricultural and industrial applications, and greenhouses.

The county will be looking for a geothermal liquid from naturally occurring groundwaters and brines of at least 120 degrees Celsius at 60 litres per second for power production.
